Defy the Defeat!
Did you know the second Friday in January is called Quitter’s Day? It’s the day many people abandon their New Year’s resolutions and slip back into old habits. But this year, let’s defy the defeat and keep moving forward instead of falling behind.
At the beginning of each year, most of us feel a surge of motivation to make positive changes in our lives. We set intentions, fueled by excitement and the promise of a fresh start. However, motivation can only take you so far. It’s natural to get tired, bored, or overwhelmed, and that’s when many of us veer off track.
The good news? You can cultivate something more powerful than fleeting motivation: discipline. Research shows it takes 21 days to form a habit. By sticking with your new routine for three weeks, you begin to build the foundation of discipline. This discipline becomes the steady force that keeps you committed to your goals, whether it’s staying on your yoga mat, prioritizing self-care, or pursuing a meaningful intention.
In yoga, we call this practice of discipline “tapas.” And no, it’s not the delicious small plates you find at Gloria’s! Tapas, in the yogic sense, refers to the inner fire that fuels transformation and perseverance. It’s the heat of dedication that keeps us showing up, even when it’s challenging. That’s why yoga is a practice, not just a workout. It’s a lifelong journey of growth, mindfulness, and resilience.
So how do we keep our New Year’s intentions alive? Here are a few tips:
Start Small: Break your goals into manageable steps. Success builds momentum, so celebrate the little wins along the way.
Set a Schedule: Consistency is key. Whether it’s daily yoga, meditation, journaling, or any other practice, carve out dedicated time to honor your commitment.
Stay Accountable: Share your goals with a friend or join a supportive community. Accountability partners can inspire and motivate you to stay on track.
Embrace the Practice: Understand that it’s okay to stumble. Progress is not linear. What matters is showing up and trying again.
This year, let’s embrace the spirit of tapas and create the life we choose. Stay strong, keep your intentions alive, and remember: You are capable of transformation. Let’s keep practicing together, one step at a time.
