Just Breathe

I love January. Of course I do.

The studio fills up with new faces, fresh energy, and big intentions. People walk through the door ready for a blank slate. A fresh start. No pressure to be perfect—just a genuine desire to feel better. And you can feel that shift.

This time of year, people aren’t trying to look like yogis. Instead, they want to feel stronger. More grounded. More themselves. That’s a good place to begin.

Earlier this week, right before class started, a woman looked around the room and quietly said, “Everyone looks like yoga professionals.”

I laughed—not at her—but because I remember thinking the exact same thing the first time I walked into a yoga studio. I was a little apprehensive. A little unsure. And yes… a little scared.

So I told her the truth. The most important thing about yoga has nothing to do with how you look in a pose. It’s how you breathe.

That usually earns me a puzzled look. After all, breathing sounds easy. Automatic. Something everyone already knows how to do.

Here’s the not-so-obvious part: most of us are only using about 20–30% of our lung capacity on a daily basis. Shallow breaths. Fast breaths. Stress breaths. The kind that keeps the body quietly on edge—even when nothing is technically “wrong.”

Thousands of years ago, yogis noticed this and called the practice pranayama—the regulation of breath, or more poetically, the expansion of life force. What they couldn’t explain with science back then, we can now.

When you slow and deepen your breath, you directly stimulate the vagus nerve—the main communication highway between your body and your brain. That signal tells your nervous system, You’re safe.
Heart rate slows. Blood pressure drops. Stress hormones like cortisol decrease. Your body shifts out of fight-or-flight and into rest-and-repair.

Meanwhile, your brain gets the memo too. Intentional breathing increases activity in areas of the brain responsible for focus, emotional regulation, and resilience. It quiets the fear center and strengthens the parts of the brain that help you stay present instead of reactive. That’s why people often say, “I feel calmer… but also clearer.”

And then there’s the cellular level—because yes, yoga goes there too.

Better breathing improves oxygen delivery to your cells, boosting mitochondrial function—those tiny power plants that create energy inside your body. More efficient cells mean better recovery, stronger muscles, improved immunity, and energy that actually lasts longer than a cup of coffee.

This is why yoga doesn’t just make you more flexible or fit. It makes you more adaptable. More resilient. More you.

At Sunshine, we encourage you to put your knees down and take child’s pose if your breath is labored or strained. It’s not about the pose, it’s about how you breathe in the pose!

The poses matter, of course. They build strength, balance, and mobility. However, it’s the breath that teaches you how to stay steady when things get intense—on the mat and in real life.

Can you breathe when you’re uncomfortable?
Can you breathe when things don’t go according to plan?

That’s the practice.
That’s why yoga has endured for thousands of years.

If you want to learn more, I’m hosting a free Intro to Yoga workshop on January 17th at 1:00 PM. Space is limited, so be sure to register. (link below or use the Sunshine Yoga Shack app under events)

And if you’re feeling the nudge to go deeper—to truly understand yoga and learn how to teach it—our Yoga Alliance–registered 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training begins soon. There are only two spots left, and Monday is the final day to enroll.

January opens the door.

All you have to do… is breathe and step inside.
