My Big Break… and Not in a Good Way

This week, I discovered that sometimes life throws us curveballs—or in my case, one very heavy box of Halloween decorations.

On Tuesday, I was in the studio attic, cheerfully pulling down cobwebs and pumpkins for our spooky season. My very last box—of course, the heaviest one—decided it wanted a faster trip to the ground. Unfortunately, it took me with it. I crashed through the acoustic tile like a cartoon character, landed on my head, split it open, and managed to break my arm in not one, but two places. (Apparently, my radius is broken clean through, and my ulna is crushed and fractured.)

So, I’m officially on the injured list for the next ten weeks. No teaching, no flying high in the silks. Just me, my sling (and not the fun kind), and a lot of patience.

But here’s where yoga comes in—because yoga isn’t just what we do on the mat. Yoga is how we breathe through the moments we can’t control, the ones that test our balance far beyond Tree Pose. Falling reminded me (quite literally) that we’re all human. We stumble, we crack, we break. But we also heal. Bones knit themselves back together. Heads stop swelling. Hearts stay wide open when we let them.

And don’t worry—the Sunshine won’t dim. Our excellent manager, Mallory, has stepped up like a total superhero. She’s already arranged subs for all classes, and the studio will continue running smoothly. You’ll still get to flow, fly, sweat, and soak in all the yoga you love.

So while I’ll be taking a forced Savasana for the next couple of months, I’ll still be with you in spirit (and likely with more time to dream up all sorts of juicy classes and mischief for when I’m back).

Until then, remember this: yoga teaches us that the body bends and sometimes breaks, but the spirit? The spirit just keeps shining.
