What Makes You Happy?

What makes you happy?

Not the quick answer… not the “I’m fine” answer… but the real one.
Because this week, I’ve been thinking about it. Standing outside in that Texas tease of a season—one day sunshine, the next day, why is it 50 degrees again—and yet… something is happening anyway.

The blooms are coming.

Even after the chill of the last few days, the trees didn’t panic. The flowers didn’t quit. The grass didn’t say, “Nope.” They just kept going. Quietly. Steadily. Becoming.

And every morning, if you look closely, there’s more green… more color… more life pushing through. Spring really does hit different.

I’ll admit it—I love the sunshine. I love the heat. I love the way the world shifts and stretches and softens into a new season. But what I love most is that reminder: growth doesn’t wait for perfect conditions.

Neither does happiness.

And here’s where it gets interesting… Does it ever feel like some people are just wired for happiness… and others are wired to see the dark? The problem? The thing that might go wrong?

Science says there’s actually some truth to that. Our brains are built with something called a negativity bias. It’s a survival mechanism—our ancestors needed to notice danger more than beauty. So the brain naturally scans for what’s wrong before it celebrates what’s right. Some people feel that more strongly than others, depending on genetics, experiences, and patterns they’ve practiced over time.

So no… It’s not always as simple as flipping a switch. But it’s also not fixed.
And this is where I hear my mom’s voice… clear as day: “You can choose to be happy, or you can choose to be sad.” She wasn’t wrong. She just skipped a step.

Because the real choice isn’t a single moment—it’s the small, daily practices that shape how your brain works over time.

We’ve all heard it before—find three things you’re grateful for each day. Sounds simple, almost too simple. But when you do that consistently, you activate the prefrontal cortex and increase dopamine and serotonin—the same feel-good chemicals targeted by antidepressants. You are literally training your brain to look for good.

And that smile you give—even when you don’t feel like it? That’s not fake. That’s feedback. When you smile, your facial muscles signal the brain to release dopamine and endorphins. Your body doesn’t always wait for happiness… sometimes it creates it.

Now let’s talk about yoga. Because this is where it all comes together.

Yoga reduces cortisol (your stress hormone), increases GABA (which calms anxiety), improves vagal tone (a reset to your nervous system), boosts serotonin, enhances breath efficiency, improves sleep, and strengthens the connection between your mind and body.

That’s not just movement. That’s transformation.

And then… You add the aerial silk. Now you’re flipping your perspective—literally. Inversions increase blood flow to the brain, stimulate your lymphatic system, and reset your sense of balance. You come down feeling lighter, clearer, and just a little more joyful—like you shook something loose that you didn’t even know you were holding onto.

So maybe happiness isn’t just something you “have”…
Maybe it’s something you practice.

A few small shifts. A few intentional choices. A few moments where you catch yourself before the spiral and choose something softer, something brighter, something more alive.

So I’ll ask you again… What makes you happy?

Is it your people? Your practice? A quiet moment with your coffee? A snuggle with your partner? The feeling of strength in your body? The sound of laughter in a room full of community?

Or maybe… It’s something you’re ready to come back to. The blooms are coming. Even after the cold. Even when the weather makes no sense.

We’re here to help you practice happiness—one breath, one stretch, one smile (real or not) at a time.
