Outgrowing What Used to Fit (On the Mat and in Life)

By February, something subtle happens. The urgency of January quiets down. The noise fades. And in that quieter space, a more honest question tends to surface—not about goals or discipline, but about alignment.

What are you still doing because it once worked… not because it fits who you are now?

It’s a little like that pair of jeans in the back of your closet. The ones you loved. They got you through a season. They were comfortable, familiar, maybe even part of your identity for a while. So you keep them. You tell yourself they’ll work again. But every time you put them on now, something’s off. They’re too tight. Or too worn. Or just not you anymore. And yet, getting rid of them feels strangely hard—because once upon a time, they fit perfectly.

That’s how old patterns work, too.

Most people assume feeling stuck means they’ve failed to stay motivated. In reality, it usually means they’ve outgrown the strategy that once carried them forward. The body knows this long before the mind catches up. You can feel it in the way effort shows up too early, in how familiar habits repeat automatically, and in the low-grade exhaustion that comes from trying to make something old fit a new version of yourself.

This is where yoga becomes more than movement.

Practice becomes powerful not because you push harder, but because you listen more honestly. When you slow down enough to notice how you’re moving, where you’re gripping, and what you’re bracing for, the body starts telling the truth. Not dramatically. Not all at once. But clearly.

From a nervous system perspective, this makes sense. The brain is wired to prefer what’s familiar, even when that familiarity is uncomfortable. Old patterns feel safe because they’re known. Letting go of what once worked can feel risky—not because it’s wrong, but because it asks us to let go of an older version of ourselves. That’s not laziness or fear. That’s biology.

Yoga doesn’t force that release. It creates the conditions for awareness. And awareness is often the beginning of real change.

At Sunshine this month, the invitation isn’t to reinvent yourself or try harder. It’s worth noting which efforts have become habitual rather than helpful. In Hot Vinyasa, that might look like questioning, where you push automatically instead of responding to what’s actually happening in your body. In Yin and Yoga Nidra, it may feel like finally letting long-held patterns—physical and mental—soften without needing to fix them. In Aerial, support becomes the teacher, asking a simple but quietly confronting question: if you’re being held, why are you still gripping?

If you’ve been feeling restless, flat, or quietly misaligned, this isn’t a sign that something is wrong. It may simply be a sign that you’ve grown.

You don’t need to become someone new.

You may just need to stop trying to make something old fit.

Come practice. Let the body lead. And listen a little more honestly.

Dearest Yogis,

You know me as the owner and a teacher here at Sunshine. However, over the past few years, my life has expanded beyond the studio in some really meaningful ways. I’ve added a few causes to my weekly schedule that matter deeply to me—and now I’m asking you to get involved, either with your time, your support, or yes… your wallet (no shame, every bit counts).

I serve as an Ambassador for Mansfield Cares, a local charity making big things happen. Mansfield Cares supports 13 area food banks, provides weekend and summer meals for children, helps kids start the school year with new shoes, and offers emergency assistance to families in need. Every dollar raised stays right here in Mansfield. You can support this mission by attending the Charity Gala, purchasing a ticket, or becoming a sponsor.

Thank you for being part of this community—on the mat and beyond it. Your support truly makes a difference.
