Pcikles and Sunshine

Pickles and Sunshine

I remember the first pickle parade 15 years ago.

I was standing at the corner of Main and Broad with my kids, who were 10, 7, and 6 at the time. It was one of those perfect Mansfield afternoons—sun shining, people laughing, the kind of day where the whole town feels like it decided to go outside together. We didn’t know exactly what we were watching unfold, only that it was delightfully strange, wildly fun, and already becoming an adventure.

There were pickles everywhere. Pickles on shirts. Pickles on floats. Beads being tossed like candy. And somehow, it just worked.

What started as a quirky hometown parade has grown into something much bigger. Today, the World’s Only St. Paddy’s Pickle Parade & Palooza draws nearly 50,000 people to historic downtown Mansfield each year. Our little corner of Texas transforms into a full-blown celebration of community, creativity, music, and—yes—pickles.

A lot has changed in 15 years. Those little kids standing next to me on the curb are now 25, 22, and 21. They’re adults with lives and stories of their own. Yet every March, this parade still pulls our town together in the same joyful way it always has. Families line the streets. Friends meet up downtown. Strangers laugh together over something wonderfully ridiculous.

From watching the parade to spinning in it, Sunshine has had a blast doing aerial flips and tricks in the parade for 8 years now.

And if you’ve never experienced it, let me tell you—this is not just a parade… It’s a palooza.

The day begins with the Pickle Run, where runners dash through town in green gear and pickle costumes that get more creative every year. By midday, the streets are buzzing with live music, food vendors, local artists, and activities happening in every direction. The parade itself rolls through downtown like a Pickle Party—floats, puppies, babies, bands, and the famous Pickle Queens waving from their royal perch. (this year I am honored to serve as a newly christened Pickle Queen)

Then the celebration keeps going. Concerts, performances, food trucks, and thousands of smiling faces fill the air.

Here’s the best part: you don’t even have to like pickles.

Sure, the briny little cucumber gets top billing, but the real magic of the day is the feeling that the entire community showed up to celebrate together. It’s laughter on every block. Music drifting down Main Street. Kids chasing beads and grown-ups rediscovering the simple joy of a small-town festival done right.

That’s why this parade has lasted 15 years—and why it keeps growing.

Because at its heart, the Pickle Parade isn’t really about pickles.

It’s about Mansfield.

It’s about neighbors showing up. It’s about families making memories. It’s about turning an ordinary Saturday into a story you’ll still be telling years later.

Just like the one I’m still telling from that sunny afternoon on Main and Broad.

And trust me… if you come this year, you might leave with a story of your own.

So mark your calendar, Saturday, March 21st, wear something green, and come join the fun.

It’s going to be a really big dill. 🥒
