The Space Between What Was and What Will Be

We are in the space between.
The quiet pause where we reflect on what worked in 2025 and gently assimilate the lessons learned when things didn’t go our way.

It’s a familiar feeling—one we practice often, whether we realize it or not. Right now, the world itself seems to be hovering in that same in-between space, preparing to reset. For some, very little will change. For others, this moment becomes the doorway to everything changing.

Most of us will stand here for a breath or two, deciding what to carry forward and what to leave behind.

The Space Between Effort and Ease

This time of year, many people set resolutions or begin new habits with the best of intentions. Some spark growth. Others fade quickly, often because they’re built on pressure rather than presence.

Yoga offers a different approach—one that lives in the space between striving and allowing.

A resolution is usually based on fixing something. It’s outcome-focused, externally motivated, and often fueled by a quiet belief that “I’m not enough yet.”

A sankalpa (what we set during Yoga Nidra), on the other hand, comes from Sanskrit and loosely translates to a heartfelt intention aligned with your deepest truth.

Here’s the key difference:

A resolution says,
“I will change myself.”

A sankalpa says,
“I will remember myself.”

Rather than pushing toward a future version of you, a sankalpa anchors into who you already are. It’s present-tense. It’s embodied. It lives in the space between effort and trust.

In our Yin, Yoga Nidra, and Sound classes, we set a sankalpa at the beginning of the guided meditation. That intention is planted gently in the subconscious mind, where lasting change actually takes root. From there, it works quietly in the background—subtly influencing choices, reactions, and patterns without force.

That’s integration.
That’s yoga off the mat.

The Space Between Repetition and Transformation

The practice of yoga is a powerful tool for navigating this in-between space. When you step onto your mat consistently, you create neuroplasticity—new neural pathways that strengthen with repetition, as well as strength, steady breath, flexibility, and a relaxed mental state.

Each time you practice, your body learns.
Your breath deepens.
Your nervous system steadies.

What once felt awkward becomes familiar. What once felt challenging becomes fluid. Over time, movement softens, strength builds, and effort gives way to ease. The body begins to move with confidence and grace—almost as if it’s floating.

That’s not magic.
That’s biology meeting devotion.

Savasana: Practicing the Space Between

If you’ve ever melted into savasana and felt as though you were not quite here—but not quite gone—you’ve touched this space directly.

In savasana, the body rests while the mind softens. You’re suspended between conscious awareness and subconscious wisdom. Thought slows. Defenses drop. The nervous system shifts into a state in which communication occurs beneath language.

This is where the untangling begins.

Neuroscience shows that during deep relaxation, the brain enters slower-wave states, enabling insight, emotional processing, and integration. Yoga knew this long before research caught up.

In that space between doing and being, clarity has space to emerge.

As 2025 comes to a close, there’s no rush to reinvent yourself. Instead, honor this space between what was and what will be. Choose an intention that feels true—not forced. Let your practice support it, one breath at a time.
