The Space Where Love Lives

The Space Where Love Lives

Valentine’s week arrives wrapped in roses, chocolate, and the language of love. Everywhere we look, the world is asking the same question in a thousand glittering ways: who—or what—do you love? Yoga, of course, asks something quieter and far more courageous. Instead of looking outward, it turns our attention inward and wonders about the quality of love living inside our own hearts.

In the yogic understanding of energy, each chakra governs not only a physical region of the body but also a region of our lived experience. The heart chakra, known as Anahata, rests at the center of the chest where breath, emotion, and awareness meet.

This space is often described as the bridge between earth and sky, the place where love grows beyond a fleeting feeling and becomes presence, acceptance, and truth. Before love can fully move outward toward another person, yoga gently invites us to uncover the layers that keep us from loving ourselves exactly as we are. No polishing is required. No waiting until we are calmer, stronger, or more healed. Just this breath. Just this moment. Just this heart.

Every chakra carries both light and shadow, and the shadow of the heart is grief. Grief for what ended, grief for what never began, and grief for the versions of life we once imagined.

This does not mean something is wrong with us; it simply means something mattered deeply enough to leave an imprint. Yet when grief settles into the chest and lingers too long, the energy of the heart can begin to slow. Life may feel flatter than it once did. Gratitude can feel distant. Excitement softens into something quiet and gray. In response, the heart does what it was designed to do when it senses danger—it closes just enough to protect us from feeling that pain again.

This is the moment when yoga becomes more than movement. This is where yoga becomes medicine.

One of the simplest and most powerful ways to invite the heart to open again is through breath. A slow, spacious inhale expands the lungs around the heart, creating a gentle internal massage that encourages circulation and the return of movement.

When the exhale lengthens and softens, especially when it becomes slightly longer than the inhale, the nervous system receives a signal of safety. The heartbeat steadies, the mind becomes clearer, and the body begins to relax its protective grip.

When we add Ujjayi pranayama, the soft ocean-like vibration in the throat, the breath becomes more than oxygen. It becomes resonance, a subtle vibration that can loosen what has been held too tightly and make space for the present moment to arrive.

The body can support this opening as well. Certain yoga postures naturally encourage prana to move through the chest and shoulders, creating space where the heart can soften without force.

  • Lifting into Fish Pose, the sternum rises toward the sky as if remembering hope.
  • Melting into Puppy Pose, the heart bows toward the earth in quiet surrender.
  • Wrapping into Eagle, the shoulder blades spread wide, revealing hidden space across the back of the heart.
  • Folding forward in Humble Warrior, love softens into devotion.
  • Standing strong in Goddess, the chest broadens with grounded, fearless presence.

None of these shapes demands that the heart open; they simply create the conditions where opening becomes possible.

During this Valentine’s week, breathe a little more fully. Soften the armor you may not have realized you were still wearing. Allow gratitude to return slowly and honestly.

Open your heart not because life is perfect, but because you are willing to feel it completely. When that happens, love rarely stays contained inside the chest. It moves outward naturally into families, friendships, and community, touching every space where people gather to breathe together.

This week, we practice letting the heart open again—one breath at a time.❤️

Dearest Yogis,

You know me as the owner and a teacher here at Sunshine. However, over the past few years, my life has expanded beyond the studio in some really meaningful ways. I’ve added a few causes to my weekly schedule that matter deeply to me—and now I’m asking you to get involved, either with your time, your support, or yes… your wallet (no shame, every bit counts).

I serve as an Ambassador for Mansfield Cares, a local charity making big things happen. Mansfield Cares supports 13 area food banks, provides weekend and summer meals for children, helps kids start the school year with new shoes, and offers emergency assistance to families in need. Every dollar raised stays right here in Mansfield. You can support this mission by attending the Charity Gala, purchasing a ticket, or becoming a sponsor.

Thank you for being part of this community—on the mat and beyond it. Your support truly makes a difference.
