Ancient Wisdom

This past week, I had the incredible experience of traveling to Central America and explore the ancient Mayan ruins of Cerro’s in Belize. Standing among these timeless structures, it was impossible not to feel a profound sense of connection with the past. These sites, etched with the wisdom of the ages, offered me a unique opportunity to reflect on the ancient teachings of Central America—and their unexpected similarities to the principles of yoga philosophy.

The Four Agreements and Yogic Principles: Parallel Pathways to Clarity:
Though they emerged from entirely different cultures and eras, the ancient wisdom of yoga and the Toltec teachings from The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz share a deep commitment to guiding us toward clarity, inner peace, and personal freedom. These spiritual traditions, though geographically worlds apart, both seek to free us from illusions and misconceptions that cloud our view of reality and ourselves. By exploring how these two paths connect, we uncover timeless insights that can help us lead lives filled with purpose and authenticity.

At the heart of both yoga philosophy and The Four Agreements is the recognition that much of what we experience is shaped by illusion and misconception. In yoga, this concept is called maya, which represents the illusion that keeps us from seeing the true nature of reality. The physical world, while real, often acts as a veil that obscures deeper truths, influenced by our desires, fears, and social conditioning. In the Toltec tradition, Ruiz speaks of mitote, or a fog of perception that clouds our minds, shaped by our beliefs and assumptions.

Both traditions encourage us to peel away these layers of illusion. In yoga, the practices of meditation, mindfulness, and self-inquiry are designed to help us quiet the mind, overcome our ego-driven thoughts, and achieve a clear view of the world as it is. Similarly, The Four Agreements provides a framework for clearing mental clutter, offering four commitments that can help us untangle from limiting beliefs and see life with fresh eyes.

Let’s dive into the four agreements outlined by Ruiz and see how they resonate with key yogic principles, illuminating a shared pathway to self-awareness and clarity.

1. Be Impeccable with Your Word
  • Toltec Wisdom: Ruiz emphasizes the importance of speaking with integrity, avoiding gossip, and practicing honesty with ourselves and others. Being impeccable with our word means understanding that words are powerful and have the ability to shape reality.
  • Yoga Connection: In yoga, the principle of satya, or truthfulness, mirrors this concept. Speaking and thinking truthfully aligns us with our authentic self, helping us see the world with a clearer mind. Like Ruiz’s teaching, yoga invites us to be conscious of our words and the energy we put into the world, as our language and intentions shape our experiences.

2. Don’t Take Anything Personally
  • Toltec Wisdom: Ruiz explains that taking things personally keeps us tethered to the judgments and opinions of others. By doing so, we make others’ perspectives our own, obscuring our personal truth.
  • Yoga Connection: The yogic practice of vairagya, or non-attachment, guides us to let go of external validations and judgments, allowing us to find peace within ourselves. Both teachings suggest that we don’t need to internalize others’ opinions; instead, we can focus on understanding our own values and perspectives. This shift frees us from the weight of others’ expectations, enabling us to move through life with greater clarity.

3. Don’t Make Assumptions
  • Toltec Wisdom: Assumptions are often the result of our own insecurities, fears, or past experiences, leading us to create stories that distort reality. Ruiz encourages open communication to replace assumptions with understanding.
  • Yoga Connection: In yoga, svadhyaya, or self-study, helps us become aware of our patterns and biases, which often contribute to assumptions. Yoga teaches us to observe life with an open, present mind, noticing the truth of each moment rather than letting assumptions shape our reality. By cultivating mindfulness, we’re able to meet each moment with curiosity instead of preconceptions, freeing ourselves from the limits of past stories.

4. Always Do Your Best
  • Toltec Wisdom: This final agreement encourages us to give our best effort, recognizing that our “best” will vary depending on the day and our circumstances. By focusing on effort rather than outcome, we avoid self-judgment and regret.
  • Yoga Connection: Yoga’s principle of tapas, or disciplined effort, similarly encourages us to pursue our practice wholeheartedly without clinging to results. Both teachings remind us that our worth is not defined by achievements but by the sincerity of our efforts. By doing our best, we become less focused on perfection and more attuned to the present, seeing life with a greater sense of purpose and clarity.

Both yoga and Toltec wisdom remind us that clarity is not achieved by controlling our circumstances but by learning to see ourselves and the world more truthfully. As we practice yoga or embrace The Four Agreements, we start to see beyond our habitual reactions and judgments. We connect with a space of presence and awareness that allows us to live from a place of peace and authenticity.

In this journey, yoga and The Four Agreements encourage us to create a life aligned with our deepest values. By peeling away the layers of illusion, we can experience a reality that is vibrant, interconnected, and profoundly real—a reality that’s always been waiting for us just beyond the fog.
