Wait... My Insurance Covers Yoga?

Wait… My Insurance Covers Yoga?

For more than fifteen years, our little yoga studio has quietly been shining a light on yoga. We’ve taught in different buildings, weathered challenges, celebrated victories, watched families grow, and welcomed thousands of people onto their mats.

Through every chapter, one thing has remained unchanged: our belief that yoga has the power to transform lives.

Long before MRI machines, neuroscience, genetics, or modern medicine, the ancient yogis were studying something far more fascinating than disease. They were studying what it meant to become fully human.

If you crack open the Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā, one of the foundational texts of Hatha Yoga written centuries ago, you’ll find teachings that were revolutionary for their time. The yogis believed that the breath and the mind were inseparable. Calm the breath, and the mind follows. They taught that the body wasn’t simply something to maintain, but the vehicle through which we discover clarity, resilience, vitality, and ultimately the highest version of ourselves.

For generations, those teachings were passed from teacher to student, long before anyone could explain why they worked.

Today, science is beginning to catch up.

Researchers can now watch the brain change with MRI, and what they’re discovering is remarkable. Regular yoga practice has been associated with increased gray matter in brain regions responsible for learning, memory, emotional regulation, and self-awareness.

Studies have also shown that the hippocampus, one of the brain’s centers for memory and resilience, appears to be better preserved in people who maintain a consistent yoga practice. At the same time, yoga helps quiet our stress response, calming the nervous system and allowing us to respond to life with greater ease rather than constantly reacting. Research

Think about that for a moment.

The ancient yogis didn’t have the language of neuroscience, but somehow they understood that changing the breath could change the mind, and changing the mind could change a life.

The discoveries don’t stop with the brain.

Scientists are now studying what happens at the cellular level. Inside every one of our cells are tiny protective caps called telomeres, often compared to the plastic tips on the ends of shoelaces. As we age, these telomeres naturally become shorter. Chronic stress can accelerate that process. Research

Research suggests that yoga and meditation may help support telomerase activity—the enzyme responsible for maintaining these protective caps—offering another glimpse into how a regular practice may support healthy aging from the inside out.

This is why I have always believed yoga is so much more than exercise. – It is preventive care.

It is caring for your future self before illness, burnout, anxiety, chronic stress, or physical limitations have the opportunity to take hold. Every time you step onto your mat, you’re making a deposit into a future that you haven’t lived yet.

You’re strengthening not only your muscles, but your nervous system. You’re training your mind as much as your body. You’re building resilience that you’ll be grateful for one day.

What makes me smile is that the healthcare world is finally beginning to recognize what yogis have understood for centuries.

Because of our new partnership with WELLMED, many people may now be able to use their HSA or FSA funds toward eligible yoga memberships and class packages. By using pre-tax healthcare dollars, qualifying participants can often save around 30% while investing in a practice designed to help them stay healthy—not simply recover after they’re sick.

I can’t tell you how excited I am about this.

For years, we’ve talked about yoga as an investment in your health. Now, healthcare is beginning to say the same thing.
