The Practice of Play

There is a beautiful idea within yoga called lila, often translated as divine play. It reminds us that caring for the body does not always have to feel serious, rigid, or punishing. Sometimes our practice can look like climbing into a bright pink silk, laughing, trying something new, and remembering how good it feels to play. Joy is not something we have to earn after working hard enough; it can be part of the practice itself.

I have been thinking about this a lot because this week, I have had several conversations about exercise and the pressure people feel to do workouts that leave them exhausted, sore, or completely miserable. Somewhere on the internet, someone is always insisting that if you are not lifting a certain amount of weight, hitting a particular heart rate, running so many miles, or training until you can barely walk, then you are doing it wrong. Apparently, taking care of our bodies now requires a checklist, a stopwatch, and just a tiny bit of suffering.

I am not saying there is anything wrong with working hard. I love feeling strong, challenging myself, and discovering what my body can do. But there is a big difference between challenging the body and punishing it, and harder is not automatically healthier. Sometimes the most intelligent thing we can do is stop chasing someone else’s definition of fitness and begin listening to the body we actually live in.

Yoga is often placed in the same category as exercise, but yoga is not simply a workout. It is a complete system of wellness that has been practiced and refined for thousands of years. Within the physical practice, we build strength, improve flexibility, develop balance, and support mobility. We also work with the breath, practice meditation, cultivate mindfulness, and learn to recognize what is happening within us before the body has to start screaming to get our attention.

A thoughtful yoga practice can be surprisingly strong. We hold and move our own body weight, stabilize our joints, strengthen the smaller supporting muscles, and move through multiple planes of motion. At the same time, we maintain and improve the flexibility that allows that strength to remain useful. Yoga does not ask us to choose between being strong and being mobile; it teaches us how the two can work together.

Perhaps the greatest strength yoga gives us, however, is discernment—the wisdom to recognize what we need today. Some days we need to sweat, work hard, and test our edges. Other days we need slow movement, longer breaths, or the stillness of Yin, meditation, and sound. Learning to tell the difference is not laziness; it is the practice of working smarter instead of believing we must always work harder.

That is one of the reasons yoga has endured for thousands of years. It was never designed merely to help us burn calories or change the shape of our bodies. It gives us tools for living inside those bodies with greater strength, awareness, steadiness, and compassion. Yoga meets us through every season of life because it can challenge us when we need challenge, support us when we need support, and remind us to enjoy being alive along the way.

As you look at this week’s schedule, try not to choose a class based solely on what the internet says you should be doing. Instead, ask yourself what would help you feel stronger, steadier, more open, or more connected right now. Maybe you need the heat and energy of Vinyasa, the strength and focus of Power Yoga, the release of Yin, the quiet of meditation and sound, or the pure joy of floating in an aerial silk.

Book the class that supports the body and the life you have today. You do not have to punish your body to prove that you care about it, but you do have to make time to care for it. Come practice with us at Sunshine Yoga Shack, and let’s move, breathe, become stronger, and make a little room for play
