Asteya | Non-Stealing: The Secret Ways We Steal

The Yamas, Week Three

As we move into our third week of exploring the Yamas—the first limb of the 8 Limbs of Yoga from the Yoga Sutras—we’re starting to see how these teachings aren’t just philosophy. They’re skills for living with more clarity, compassion, and honesty. Each Yama invites us to consider how we show up in the world, and Asteya asks us to notice the places where we take more than we give… often without realizing it.

Understanding Asteya in a Modern World

Asteya translates to non-stealing, yet the heart of this practice stretches far beyond the literal. It encourages us to be aware of the subtle ways we borrow from others, from the earth, from our future, and even from our own potential.

We “steal” from others when we take their time without offering respect or presence, like showing up late or staying distracted during a conversation. We also steal from others when we look at our phones instead of engaging fully with the people right in front of us.

We “steal” from the earth when we forget that our choices leave a footprint—like overconsumption, waste, or choosing convenience over care.

We “steal” from the future when procrastination builds—like pushing responsibilities off until they become tomorrow’s stress. We also steal time from ourselves when we stay up too late and use energy drinks or caffeine to force energy we don’t actually have, knowing the crash will land on us later.

And we “steal” from ourselves when we avoid growth—like skipping practice, ignoring what we truly need (like bad eating habits), or holding back from the work that would support us most.

Every tiny action plants a seed somewhere—today, tomorrow, or far down the road.

Choosing Asteya shifts us from grasping to growing. Instead of taking shortcuts or clinging to what we wish we knew, we build competence through steady practice. We learn, we listen, and we grow. That slow, steady foundation builds confidence that feels earned rather than borrowed.

Adhikara — The Right to Know

This is where the concept of Adhikara comes in. In yoga philosophy, Adhikara refers to earning our understanding. It’s the right and the capacity to know, to comprehend, and eventually to teach—but that right isn’t automatic. It develops through patience, curiosity, and consistent effort.

The more we practice, the more we understand.

The more we return to the mat, the more skills we cultivate to guide others.
And the more we invest in our growth, the more capable we become of sharing our knowledge or skill, like yoga, in a way that feels grounded and authentic.

Yoga never demands perfection. It simply asks us to show up—again and again—trusting that practice will do its work.

The Real Gift of Practice

Consistent practice helps us “earn” our wisdom. It nurtures strength, insight, and steadiness, allowing yoga to shape who we become. When we show up now, we aren’t stealing from our future selves—we’re preparing something solid, spacious, and supportive for the version of us we haven’t met yet.
