Brahmacharya | Non-Excess: The Art of Enough

The Yamas, Week Four

Here we are in Week Four of exploring the Yamas—the first limb of the 8 Limbs of Yoga from the Yoga Sutras—and the deeper we go, the more these teachings start to feel less like old philosophy and more like a practical guide for staying sane in a world that loves “more.” Each Yama asks us to pause long enough to notice how we’re living, how we’re responding, and how we’re caring for ourselves.

This week, we meet Brahmacharya, traditionally tied to celibacy but much more meaningful today as non-excess—the practice of honoring our energy by refusing to overdo, overconsume, or overextend.

Understanding Brahmacharya in a Modern World

Brahmacharya isn’t about denying pleasure or pretending you’re above wanting things. It’s about recognizing when something that once felt nourishing suddenly starts draining your energy. It’s the moment when enjoying a little treat turns into polishing off the whole bag, or when unwinding with your phone turns into scrolling until midnight and waking up wondering why life feels like a fog.

It’s also that instinct to push past your limits because you don’t want to disappoint anyone, even when your whole body is begging for rest. Excess has a way of slipping into our lives quietly—almost politely—until we wake up exhausted and can’t remember how we got there.

At its heart, Brahmacharya invites us to ask a simple question: “Is this giving me energy or taking it away?”
And when we ask that honestly, the answers are usually loud and clear.

We step into excess when we overwork, overspend, overcommit, overthink, or over-caffeinate. We fall into excess when we rush through our days on autopilot or chase busyness like it’s a badge of honor. Even the things that look healthy on the surface—like staying overly strict with diets, grinding through workouts, or filling every moment with productivity—can tip into imbalance.

Non-Excess as a Form of Protection

Practicing Brahmacharya is really about protecting your energy like it’s sacred—because it is. When we move through life with intention instead of urgency, something starts to shift. The mind softens, the nervous system unwinds, and the choices we make come from clarity instead of chaos.

And here’s the part we often forget: moderation doesn’t reduce joy. It actually creates space for joy. When we’re not stretched thin, we’re finally able to show up fully—with presence, ease, and a little bit of spark.

Where Excess Shows Up Quietly

Excess isn’t always loud; most of the time, it’s subtle. It shows up when we stay up too late promising ourselves we’ll sleep more tomorrow. It shows up when we push through exhaustion because we feel guilty resting. It shows up when we pack our days so tightly that we forget to breathe between commitments. And it absolutely shows up when we drown discomfort in distraction instead of sitting with it long enough to understand what it’s trying to tell us.

Brahmacharya isn’t about restriction or saying “no” to life. It’s about saying “yes” to the right things—and saying it with intention. It’s a reminder that your energy is finite, precious, and worthy of care.

Adhikara — Building the Capacity to Know

Just like Asteya helped us explore the idea of earning our wisdom, Brahmacharya helps us cultivate the capacity to actually hold that wisdom. When you’re not depleted by excess, your mind absorbs more clearly. Your body practices more steadily. Your intuition sharpens. Teaching becomes natural because understanding comes from experience, not exhaustion.

Adhikara—the right and readiness to know—grows when your energy is balanced. It’s nearly impossible to build mastery when we’re running on fumes, but when we create room for stillness and enoughness, our practice deepens almost effortlessly.

Yoga has never asked us to be perfect. It asks us to be consistent. And consistency thrives when we’re not overextended.

The Real Gift of Non-Excess

Brahmacharya is a devotion to your future self. Every time you choose “enough” over “too much,” you reclaim your clarity, protect your energy, and strengthen your ability to listen to your inner wisdom. You stop leaking your prana into places that don’t deserve it and start investing it where it truly matters—your practice, your relationships, your peace, your joy.

Choosing non-excess is choosing steadiness. It’s choosing alignment. It’s choosing the version of you that doesn’t just survive your day but actually feels awake, present, and alive in it.
