Yoga Myths

Debunking the Myths of Yoga

This past week I had the joy of teaching yoga in Cap Cana, Dominican Republic. It was a gorgeous vacation—lots of sunshine and a steady ocean breeze—but what made it unforgettable wasn’t the scenery. It was the people.

Many of them had never tried yoga before. And you know what I heard again and again?

“I can’t do yoga because I’m not flexible.”

That’s when I knew this newsletter had to be about busting the biggest myths about yoga.

Myth #1: “You have to be flexible to do yoga.”

This is the big one. Flexibility is not a prerequisite—it’s a side effect. Yoga is about strength, breath, and balance in both body and mind. You don’t need to touch your toes; you just need to show up. And yes, with regular practice, flexibility will come.

Myth #2: “Yoga is just stretching.”

Not quite. Sure, you feel stretched after class, but yoga is actually active resistance training using your own body weight. Every inhale activates your muscles; every exhale releases tension. With consistent practice, you’ll gain not just flexibility but also strength, stamina, resilience, and stress relief.

Myth #3: “Yoga is only for women.”

Tell that to the ancient yogis of India—all men. Today, yoga is for everyone: athletes who need balance, desk workers who need mobility, moms who crave quiet, dads who need to breathe, and anyone looking to improve their health. Your yoga mat doesn’t care about your gender.

Myth #4: “Yoga is a religion.”

This one’s tricky. Yoga comes from the Vedas, the same ancient texts that shaped Hinduism. But yoga itself is a practice, not a religion. It can deepen your spirituality if that’s what you seek—or it can simply be a great workout with a calming bonus. Think of yoga as a toolbox: take what you need, leave the rest.

Myth #5: “I’m too old/young/out of shape to start.”

Yoga meets you exactly where you are. Chairs, props, and modifications make yoga accessible for every body, every age, and every level of experience. The hardest step is simply walking through the door.

At Sunshine Yoga Shack, we offer:

  • Vinyasa Yoga to move dynamically with breath and build heat

  • Yin Yoga to slow down, stretch deeply, and restore

  • Deep Hatha Yoga for a grounding, beginner-friendly practice that builds strength and awareness at a steady pace

  • Aerial Yoga to strengthen, stretch, and flow while suspended in silk

There is truly a class for everyone.

Myth #6: “Yoga Hurts.”

This one needs a loud and clear: No, it shouldn’t.

Yoga is never meant to cause pain. The purpose of yoga is to heal, strengthen, and connect. It’s about exploring your body and energy with curiosity, so you can understand who you are and what you truly need.

Yes, yoga challenges you, but there’s a huge difference between challenge and pain. The magic happens at the edge—where you meet resistance, breathe through it, and teach your nervous system how to self-soothe. That’s where growth, healing, and resilience live.

🧠 The Neuroscience Connection

Yoga isn’t just for your muscles—it’s for your mind.

  • Deep breathing calms the amygdala, the brain’s stress center.

  • Balance and mindful movement strengthen the prefrontal cortex, improving focus and decision-making.

  • The rhythm of effort and release enhances neuroplasticity—your brain’s ability to adapt, learn, and grow.

That’s why after yoga, you don’t just feel stretched—you feel lighter, calmer, and more clear-headed.

🌸 Closing Thought

Yoga isn’t about bending yourself into a pretzel—it’s about untying the knots life ties inside you.

Come see for yourself at Sunshine Yoga Shack, where every body is welcome.
