Feeling Rooted
The Root Chakra, known as Muladhara, is the foundation of our energetic body. In yoga philosophy, chakras are energy centers located along the central axis of the body called Sushumna that regulate the flow of prana, or life force energy. There are seven main chakras, each influencing different physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of our being.
The Root Chakra is located at the base of the spine and governs our sense of safety, security, and survival. Just as the roots of a tree anchor it firmly to the earth, the Root Chakra grounds us, providing a sense of stability and strength in both body and mind. Its color, red, has the longest wavelength of any color in the spectrum, symbolizing vitality, strength, and grounding energy.
The Root Chakra is linked to the element of earth, representing stability and connection to the physical world. It influences our most basic needs — food, shelter, financial security, and the feeling of belonging. When this chakra is balanced, we feel confident, supported, and at ease within ourselves and the world around us.
Every chakra has a shadow, and for the Root Chakra, the shadow reveals itself as fear — fear of instability, abandonment, and lack of safety. When the Root Chakra is blocked or underactive, it can create feelings of uncertainty, insecurity, and a lack of trust in life’s unfolding. You may feel ungrounded, anxious, or disconnected from your body. On a physical level, this imbalance can manifest as fatigue, lower back pain, or issues with the legs and feet. Emotionally, it may lead to chronic worry about the future or an inability to relax. On the other hand, an overactive Root Chakra can show up as controlling behavior, materialism, defensiveness, or aggression — a need to overcompensate for the lack of inner security.
The Root Chakra holds the energy of survival and ancestral memory. It is where fight-or-flight responses are stored, along with patterns of security and fear passed down through generations. Balancing this chakra involves reconnecting with the earth and grounding yourself in the present moment. Through mindful movement, breathwork, and connection to nature, you can release the heaviness of fear and rediscover the strength that comes from within.
To bring the Root Chakra into balance, practice grounding yoga poses like Mountain Pose (Tadasana), Child’s Pose (Balasana), Warrior I (Virabhadrasana I), and Malasana (Squat). Deep belly breathing, where you breathe fully into the lower abdomen, helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system and creates a sense of safety. Affirmations such as “I am safe,” “I am grounded,” and “I trust in the flow of life” can help reinforce feelings of inner security. Spending time in nature, walking barefoot on the earth, and visualizing a warm red light at the base of your spine expanding with each breath can also help restore balance.
Balancing the Root Chakra is about finding security not only in the external world but also within yourself. When you release fear and instability stored in Muladhara, you uncover a deep, unshakable strength. From this place of grounded energy, you can move through life with confidence, knowing that you are supported — always.
As the foundation of the chakra system, the Root Chakra sets the stage for the flow of energy upward toward the crown. When the root is strong and balanced, it creates a stable base for the higher chakras to open and thrive. A grounded foundation allows us to feel secure enough to explore creativity, love, intuition, and spiritual connection. Strength at the root paves the way for growth and expansion through all levels of the self. Take a deep breath. Feel your feet on the ground. You are safe. You are rooted. You are home. ❤️
