What is your formula for success? The past few weeks our trainees have explored the science of Ayurveda. Everyone on the planet has a distinct make up of elements in their building blocks of life.
When we uncover our basic constitution, we unlock the secrets to living as our best selves. Ayurveda, the ancient “science of life,” offers a personalized approach to wellness by helping us find balance in body, mind, and spirit.
At the heart of Ayurveda are the doshas—three primary energies that influence every aspect of our being:
- Vata (Air + Ether): Governs movement, creativity, and flexibility. When balanced, Vata inspires vitality and imagination; when imbalanced, it may lead to anxiety or scattered thoughts.
- Pitta (Fire + Water): Drives digestion, transformation, and intellect. A balanced Pitta promotes clarity and determination, while an imbalance might cause irritability or inflammation.
- Kapha (Earth + Water): Provides stability, strength, and compassion. Balanced Kapha fosters calm and endurance, but an excess may lead to lethargy or resistance to change.
When we bring balance to our elemental foundation we bring balance to our life.
Ayurveda also highlights the importance of the food we eat in achieving balance, focusing on the six tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent. Each taste interacts with the doshas differently, guiding us toward harmony. When you satisfy your hunger of these taste you redefine what foods you crave.
- Sweet (Earth + Water): Nourishes and grounds (balances Vata and Pitta).
- Sour (Earth + Fire): Energizes and stimulates digestion (balances Vata).
- Salty (Water + Fire): Hydrates and enhances flavor (balances Vata).
- Bitter (Air + Ether): Detoxifies and lightens (balances Pitta and Kapha).
- Pungent (Fire + Air): Clears stagnation and invigorates (balances Kapha).
- Astringent (Air + Earth): Soothes inflammation and firms tissues (balances Pitta and Kapha).
Understanding your dosha (your combination of elements) and incorporating these tastes into your meals creates a foundation for success—one rooted in balance and self-awareness.
