The Moon Side of Your Practice

There’s a moment that happens in almost every Yin class, and if you’ve experienced it, you know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s not at the very beginning, when everyone is still settling in, adjusting blankets, and figuring out how to get comfortable. It usually comes a little later, somewhere between the second and third pose, when the room gets quiet, and something inside you shifts.

You stop trying so hard.

Not because you gave up… but because something in your body finally realized it doesn’t have to keep holding everything together.

And from that moment on, the experience changes.
Most of our lives don’t look anything like that.

We move fast. We think fast. We’re constantly doing, solving, planning, reacting. Even when we come to yoga, we often carry that same energy with us. We flow, we strengthen, we build heat, we move with purpose and effort. That’s the yang side of the practice, and it matters. It builds strength, confidence, and resilience. But the body doesn’t only need effort to feel good.It also needs space.Yin Yoga lives in that space.Instead of moving in and out of poses, we settle into shapes that are simple, on the ground, and we give ourselves time to be there. At first, it can feel a little uncomfortable—not just physically, but mentally. The urge to adjust, to fidget, to come out of the pose shows up quickly. That’s normal. That’s what we’re used to.

But if you stay, if you breathe, if you let the moment unfold rather than rush through it, something begins to soften.

And what’s happening isn’t a stretch.

Yin reaches into the deeper layers of the body—the connective tissue that holds everything together. This tissue doesn’t respond to speed or force. It responds to time. To patience. To gentle, steady pressure that invites it to slowly release and open.

It’s subtle, but it’s powerful.

Because that tissue is connected to everything. It weaves through your entire body, carrying sensation, holding patterns, and reflecting how you move through your life. When it’s tight or restricted, things can feel stuck. When it begins to open, there’s a sense of space—not just physically, but energetically too.

And then there’s the part you can’t always see, but you can absolutely feel.

When you slow down like this, your whole system starts to shift. Your breath deepens. Your heart rate softens. Your body moves out of that constant “go” mode and into something quieter, more settled.

And in that space, things begin to release.

Sometimes it’s just physical tension. Your hips feel lighter, your back feels more open, your body feels like it can finally exhale. Other times, it’s something deeper. A feeling you didn’t expect. A wave of emotion that doesn’t quite have a story attached to it. It can catch you off guard if you’re not used to it.

But it’s not random.

It’s your body finally having the space to process instead of push through.

This is the moon side of your practice. It’s not about doing more. It’s about allowing more. If the more active styles of yoga help you build strength and move energy, Yin helps you create the space for that energy to move freely. It’s where you restore what constant movement can’t fix. It’s where you listen instead of lead.

Most of us don’t need more effort.

We need moments like that one in class… when the room gets quiet, when the breath slows down, and when, for just a little while,

We remember what it feels like to be supported instead of holding everything on our own.

That’s Yin.

And once you feel it, you start to understand…This isn’t the easy part of the practice.

It’s the necessary part.
