The concept of “finding the zone” or entering a flow state is not merely reserved for avatars, athletes, or artists. It’s accessible to all, provided we know how to tap into it. This state, where we feel fully engaged yet relaxed and unburdened by the stresses of life, can be cultivated through intentional practices like yoga, aerial, and breathwork.
Why do we wish to find the state of flow?
“Flow, or being “in the zone,†is a state of amped-up creativity, enhanced productivity and blissful consciousness that, some psychologists believe, is also the secret to happiness. It’s considered the brain’s fast track to success in business, the arts or any other field.” as stated in this article in Neuroscience News
Practiced yogis and aerialists learn to use their bodies as instruments. Consistent yoga or aerial yoga practice can transport the practitioner into a flow state through breathwork and bodily connection. When you practice to a point where you can find a relaxed conscious control, the movement becomes meditation.
Yoga is a time-honored practice that unites the mind, body, and spirit. It’s not just about physical postures; it’s a pathway to deeper self-awareness and mindful presence. Each pose (asana) requires a blend of focus and release, teaching us how to apply relaxed conscious control over our bodies and minds. By engaging in a consistent yoga practice, we learn to release tension, quiet the chatter of the mind, and enter a more peaceful state of being.
Aerial yoga is an elevated form of Yoga. It is different from other forms of yoga because it includes spinning, inversions, and lifting. However, the same level of mindfulness and focus is required.
Breathwork, or Pranayama, is another foundational element in achieving a relaxed and mindful state. It involves various techniques to control the breath, each with its benefits. By bringing our attention to our breathing, we can induce a sense of calm, reduce stress, and even alter our mental and emotional states. We can activate our parasympathetic nervous system through controlled breathing, signaling our body to relax and recharge.
The key to mastering relaxed conscious control lies in consistency and intention. It’s not about perfection or achieving a certain state every time you practice. Rather, it’s the ongoing commitment to showing up for yourself, exploring your inner world, and honoring whatever arises.
