What is Aerial Yoga?
Have you ever wanted to fly? Learn to fly with Aerial Yoga a hybrid practice with the elements of Yoga and the elements of flying as you are suspended in the air with the use of an aerial silk fabric. It utilizes dance, strength training, acrobatics with pranayama or breath work, mindfulness, and meditation. The hammock acts as a support for the body during various poses that would normally be done on the floor. During an aerial yoga session, practitioners move through sequences of poses while using the hammock for balance and assistance in stretching and strengthening. It allows for inversions and other moves not possible with regular yoga while introducing aerial skills and tricks.
Where did Aerial Yoga Come From?
Was it BKS Iyengar and his invention of the rope yoga wall or the French Circus schools from the 1950’s? Both contributed to elements as it gained popularity in Europe in the early 21st century. Performers created shows combining acrobatics and gymnastics with elements of traditional circus performance. Eventually, these performances made their way into gyms and yoga studios around the world, where they were adapted into a more accessible form known as aerial yoga!
How does Aerial Yoga Feel?
Most practitioners describe aerial yoga as liberating and energizing. In addition to being physically challenging, aerial yoga offers deeper stretches due to gravity aiding your body weight during poses. This can also help improve alignment since you have an external point of reference for your body movements instead of relying on your own internal awareness (as you do in regular ground-based yoga). Many people also find that practicing inversions or backbends upside down helps reduce feelings of anxiety or depression since it encourages blood flow throughout the body. As you learn more advanced skills in aerial yoga you will experience the sensation of flying while tethered to the fabric.
