Yoga for Physical Strength
While yoga may not be the first thing that comes to mind for building physical strength, it’s an incredibly effective practice for strengthening the entire body. Yoga postures, or asanas, build strength in our bones and muscles in the whole body. Even holding a simple pose like a plank pose for an extended period of time can help build strength and endurance. Practicing yoga regularly can lead to a leaner, more toned physique and improved overall physical health.
The Power of Plank Pose
One of the best poses for building full-body strength is Plank Pose or Phalakasana. This pose engages the core, shoulders, arms, glutes, and thighs, making it a true full-body strengthening posture. To practice plank safely, start with your knees down and work up to a full high plank. If your belly is slopping down, you could cause injury. We often vinyasa flow from high to low plank or chutarunga dandasana. Keep integrity in your shoulder girdle to prevent injury when lowering from high to low plank by only lowering halfway down.
Yoga for Mental Strength
Along with the physical benefits, yoga also has mental health benefits that help build strength from within. Through yoga, we learn to focus and quiet the mind. Yoga works to clear mental disturbances, or vrittis, which can lead to a sense of mental clarity and focus. With regular practice, yoga can help reduce stress and anxiety, promoting mental strength and resilience.
