Yoga is a practice deeply entwined with the essence of strength. Far from the misconception of mere flexibility and stillness, it’s a path that leads to personal power. Whether one’s feet are firmly grounded on the mat in a studio or one’s body is suspended in the air, the layers of muscular, mental, and spiritual strength peel away.
The strength that the ancient practice of yoga can unveil, from the firm foundation of ground yoga to the boundless space of aerial yoga. Whether you’re flexing your biceps or your mind, this guide will help you appreciate just how vast the concept of strength is within the yoga world and how it can influence every aspect of your life.
Finding Strength with Yoga: On the Ground
When we talk about strength in the context of yoga, we’re not merely referring to the ability to hold a pose for a long time. Yoga’s power lies in the intricate balance of strength and flexibility, both physical and mental.
While strength and flexibility might seem like opposites, they are, in fact, intricately linked, and yoga is the workshop where we fuse them together. A lean, strong muscle has a broader range of motion, which is the essence of functional strength. Practices like Vinyasa yoga lead you in a dynamic flow that requires you to engage and release muscles with precision and fluidity.
Your core isn’t just the “six-pack” muscles; it’s a deep network of muscles that stabilize and support your spine and pelvis. Poses like Chaturanga Dandasana (high to low plank) and Vasisthasana (Side Plank) are like wake-up calls to this vital muscle group. As you find your balance in Tree Pose or Warrior III, you’re not just engaging your core but aligning your structure with a stronger sense of self.
Strength in yoga is as much about mental endurance as it is about physical prowess. The silence of meditation, the struggle to quiet a chattering mind, and the focus required to hold a pose are the mental challenges where we forge inner strength.
Strength cultivated on the mat is a strength you carry with you. It transforms how you stand, sit, and move in the world. It’s the strength to face obstacles with calm determination and the resilience to bounce back from life’s challenges.
Aerial Transforms the Body: One Practitioner’s Perspective
Transitioning from ground to air yoga can be a leap of faith. The hammock, or silk, becomes your new best friend, allowing you to find depth in stretches and support in inversions that can transform your practice.
Aerial yoga provides a dynamic and fun way to build strength. From pulling yourself up into inversions that seem to defy gravity to develop the upper body strength required for more advanced poses, aerial yoga can give you a full-body workout you’ll feel from head to toe.
The gentle traction provided by the hammock in aerial yoga can decompress the spine, help alleviate back pain, and increase flexibility. As our aerial practitioner attests, the feeling of strength and openness in the spine after an aerial session is nothing short of liberating. One aerialist even says aerial transformed her body.
Finding Strength in Silence: A Yin Perspective
Yin yoga, the quiet cousin of its more dynamic yang counterparts, is a profound practice that involves holding poses for long periods – often up to five minutes. This meditative practice works deeply on the connective tissues and can be transformative in its own subtle way.
Finding the strength to be still can be challenging in our fast-paced lives. Yin yoga invites practitioners to find that inner stillness, and in doing so, we build a different kind of strength: patience, resilience, and the ability to surrender to discomfort without struggle.
Yin yoga requires a different kind of endurance. It’s the strength to withstand time and tension, not forcefully, but through a gentle resolve. As our bodies soften, our connective tissues and joints open, and we find that the boundary between our physical and emotional selves can soften, too.
The End Result: A Greater Capacity
The strength we cultivate in yin yoga, both physical and mental, gives us a greater capacity to live life fully, to move through the world steadily, and to endure life’s challenges with a calm, open heart.
Embarking on Your Yoga Journey
No matter which path you take in yoga, the ultimate goal remains the same: to uncover the layers of strength within you. As you unroll your mat, whether it’s for a powerful heated practice or a soothing Yin session, know that each breath, each movement, is building a fortress within – a fortress of strength, flexibility, and unwavering inner power.

Studio News – Studio Etiquette
Dear New Yogis and Aerial Yogis,
We are so excited we have many new members practicing with us. Let’s take a moment and review some studio policies to ensure everyone has a great time every time.
- Adult classes are for those 12 and up unless you pass an aerial test with Lynn to get special permission. We have Sunshine Kids Aerial most Sunday afternoons.
- Classes do not allow an audience. If you are not taking classes, please wait outside or at one of the great nearby restaurants or coffee shops.
- Please be on time and plan to stay for the entire class. Coming in late or leaving early disrupts the experience of others.
- Please silence your phones during all classes.
- If you practice often, please bring your own mat.
- If you borrow a studio mat, please only use one to allow others to have a mat.
- Please register for your class. We need to know if you will be at the studio for a number of reasons.
- If you cannot make it, please cancel as early as possible. This will help us a great deal, no judgment.
- Please do not take videos during class. After class, it is fine to film what you learned but be considerate to keep others out of your shot.
- NO jewelry in the aerial fabric, with the exception of sports watches that are smooth.! You can get injured, and it can rip the fabric.
- NO dagger or claw nails in the fabric. Aerial fabric is very expensive, and you may be liable to replace it.
- NO zippers in the fabric.
- In Aerial, you must wear socks; bare feet are best for yoga.
- Sunshine is your yoga home, and we are your yoga family; please be respectful and kind to all.
Please reach out if you have any questions or comments; I will gladly discuss.
